Emotional intelligence (EI) is a unique repertoire of emotional skills that you use to navigate the everyday challenges in your life. In his book Emotional Intelligence Daniel Goleman defines EI as the "capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and our relationships."
Reuven BarOn, a psychologist, devised a model of Emotional Intelligence and used it to create his Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i®). Throughout his research, his intent was to create a predictor of success. This self-assessment pinpoints the traits that allow a person to succeed and those that stand in the way of progress. For this reason the tool is particularly useful in personal and professional development. The EQ-i was the first scientifically validated self-report measure of Emotional Intelligence, and it is still one of the most widely used assessments for gauging EI.
First you have to understand your own Emotional Intelligence and what drives you as an individual. In understanding your EI, you will be able to communicate effectively, form strong relationships and create powerful coping strategies; emotionally unintelligent people don’t—no matter how high their IQs.
Your Emotional Intelligence can be measured—more reliably and less controversially than IQ—and, unlike IQ; it can be substantially strengthened and developed.
Research has demonstrated that your Emotional Intelligence is often a more accurate predictor of your success than your IQ. No matter how intellectually intelligent you are, your success is still governed by how well you communicate your ideas and interact with your peers.
