Are you Working too Hard?
We all know that saying which tells us to wake up and smell the roses because we are working too hard. We miss out on so much because our thoughts are focussed elsewhere, on our business primarily. We live constantly in the future and forget that we are actually living in the present. The weeks pass by quickly and we say ‘its Friday already, where has the week gone or even where has the year gone?’
I wrote a tweet out once that when we work too hard and not take time out for ourselves, every day seems like a chore. We all came into our own business because we are passionate about what we do. We also love the freedom of being our own boss, making our own decisions and not having to answer to anyone if something does not work out. The key word in this paragraph is FREEDOM. This is what drove us primarily to leave our comfortable paying job with all the security that goes along with it. But where is the Freedom now when we cannot even live in the moment or take a couple of days off?
Is this a habit or just a way of Being? I think it is a bit of both actually. We have got into the habit of looking at our emails all hours of the day and night. We have got into the habit of not taking any holidays because we have too much on. When you run your own business there is never a good time to take a holiday so we have got into the habit of working more and taking less time off for ourselves. These habits have now become a way of Being for us. This is how we live in the world today and we see nothing wrong with it because this is what business owners do, right.
Right, that’s what we do but it does not mean that it is right. We all know what it feels like when we take that time out whether it is a long weekend or the luxury of one or two weeks away. We come back energised, relaxed, we feel refreshed, why because we lived every moment of our holiday. Okay it probably took us 2-3 days to unwind, depending on how busy we were before we left but when we did unwind we became connected and started to smell the roses again, well not literally but you know what I mean. We noticed nature, vista’s, relaxed over a meal instead of looking at our watch and gobbling down our food because we either had to get to another meeting or we need to check our emails or send that quotation out at 10.00 in the evening.
So what can we do? It is not going to be easy to change the habit but we can change. We have to remember why we started our own business in the first place. I know some people may have had to start a business out of necessity but mostly we started our business for the FREEDOM it would bring. Let’s start to enjoy this freedom now before we get into ill health because we are not taking care of ourselves. By the way this Blog does not only refer to business owners but also to those hard working people out there who are on a treadmill and experience everything I am saying here.
I started this category in my Blog because I believe it is something that we should be having a conversation about. Sometimes we can plod along and not even realise what is happening. However, when we bring something into our awareness changes start to occur as you begin to realise that what you are doing right now is not serving you in any meaningful way. We all work so hard so we deserve that Freedom we yearned for when we started out.
